The Dover George: A Historic Gem Reimagined as a Modern Boutique Retreat

In 2018, a 150-year-old home underwent a remarkable transformation, becoming The Dover George, a boutique retreat nestled on Ontario’s scenic Lake Erie north shore. This thoughtfully designed accommodation combines historic charm with modern elegance, offering a peaceful escape from urban life. Owners Hélène Larochelle and Michael Nimchuk, driven by their shared vision, meticulously restored the property. Nimchuk, acting as the general contractor, steered the project to completion despite the challenges of the pandemic.

The Dover George is a stately red-brick house that exudes timeless appeal. Guests step into a welcoming sitting room where caramel-hued leather chairs, clean white accents, and a library complete with vintage board games and rotary telephone to create a warm, nostalgic atmosphere. This careful blend of old and new is evident throughout the property, where thoughtful design elements—including pony-skin rugs, nautical-inspired taps, and an extendable communal dining table—balance functionality with intricate craftsmanship.

The inn’s four suites are designed for ultimate comfort, accommodating two guests each. Modern conveniences such as Frette linens, Dyson hair dryers, heated floors, and smartphone-enabled locks ensure a seamless stay. Drawing inspiration from their own travels, Larochelle and Nimchuk added personal touches like size-inclusive towels and robes, loose-leaf tea, and high-quality coffee tools. Guests are encouraged to enjoy pour-over coffee using Fellow equipment, freshly roasted beans from Detour Coffee Roasters, and step-by-step instructions provided in-room.

A commitment to sustainability and local partnerships is evident throughout the property. Toiletries are sourced from North Shore Soapworks, featuring a custom scent of citrus and herbal notes crafted exclusively for The Dover George. Bathrooms pop with turquoise concrete sinks and combine oversized showers, matte-brass fixtures, and crisp white tiles to create a bright, luxurious space.

Suite 4, the penthouse, is the standout accommodation, offering nearly 1,000 square feet of well-appointed living space. A cathedral ceiling and skylights fill the suite with natural light, while a clever push-out-style Juliet balcony allows guests to step outside and soak up the surroundings. The suite features a king-size bed, multiple seating areas, and a spa-style wet room equipped with an oversized shower and a freestanding bathtub. For an added touch of charm, a vintage Malm fireplace is paired with reupholstered cream chairs. Every stay includes a gourmet continental breakfast featuring local and fresh ingredients.

The warm atmosphere, from the moment guests arrive to the breakfast experience, ensures everyone feels comfortable, pampered, and at home.

The Dover George is more than just a place to stay—it’s a hub for culinary and cultural experiences that celebrate the region known as “Ontario’s Garden.” Its event space hosts an array of gatherings, from pop-up dinners and cocktail evenings to product launches and blind-tasting menus. Guests and visitors alike can explore the rich local food culture, which reflects the abundance of the surrounding farmlands.

Whether visiting for a serene getaway, a special event, or a taste of Lake Erie’s rich heritage, The Dover George offers an experience that feels both luxurious and personal. With its thoughtful design, modern amenities, and focus on local partnerships, it’s a perfect blend of comfort, style, and community spirit.
