Not only will it bring beauty and functionality, but it can also add lasting value. That said, it’s definitely a big investment, and with so many choices to make, it’s easy to feel both overwhelmed and a little nervous. Whether you’re updating a dated space or finally creating your dream kitchen, I’ve gathered some of my best tips to help guide you through the process and make your renovation journey a little easier.
Do your homework Before diving too deep into the ‘pretty’ part of your kitchen design, it’s essential to assess how you want to use your kitchen. Think about your cooking habits, who uses the space, what works and what doesn’t, how often you entertain, and who gathers in the space. Are you looking for a more open layout for socializing, or do you prefer defined spaces for cooking and dining? I like to recommend my clients do a mock run through of a typical day in their kitchen. Where would you ideally like your spices, oils, pans, dishes? What items do you access frequently? Really getting an understanding of your lifestyle and functional needs will help guide decisions about layout, storage, and appliances. Make a long list and reference this throughout the process.
Get clear on your style from the start! Kitchens offer so many design options, and it’s common for many to struggle with defining their style. To avoid costly changes later, we always work with our clients early on to nail down their aesthetic. One great way to start is by creating mood boards with photos, colors, and inspirations that set the tone. If you’re unsure about your style, try using Pinterest to collect images of kitchens you love. Then, ask yourself what you’re drawn to—whether it’s the colors, textures, or lighting. You’ll start to notice patterns that reveal your style.
Choose the right materials Selecting materials that align with your design vision and lifestyle is crucial. Consider durability, maintenance, and style when choosing countertops, cabinets, and flooring. For example, quartz countertops offer durability and easy maintenance, while hardwood floors can exude warmth. It’s wise to choose materials that not only match your aesthetic but can withstand the rigors of a busy kitchen. Always ensure you ask questions about durability and upkeep before making a final decision.
Don’t forget about your lighting Lighting plays a significant role in a kitchen’s functionality and atmosphere. Ensure there is a mix of ambient, task, and accent lighting. Overhead fixtures or pendant lights can provide general illumination, while under-cabinet lights offer focused light for food preparation. Dimmer switches can enhance the mood during gatherings, making your kitchen more versatile.
Budget wisely This one goes without saying but important to remember… Kitchen renovations can be costly. Period. And throughout your renovation you will be faced with hundreds of decisions that will ultimately impact your final costs. Overall size (square footage), material selection (i.e. quartz vs marble), level of customization and labour are the biggest factors that will impact the range of your costs. Use your functional needs to prioritize what matters most to you and allocate your funds accordingly. Remember to leave room for unforeseen expenses, typically around 10-20% of your total budget.
Consider (and be realistic) with your timeline Early in your process you will want to start to think about what professionals are going to help support you bring your vision to life and get a clear understanding of their timeline. Most kitchens take several weeks to months to design with a typical lead time between final decision to installation of 8-12 weeks. When you consider demolition, permitting, countertop installation, etc you will want to assume a kitchen renovation will take upwards of 6 to 12 months to fully execute from the point you start dreaming, to your reveal party. Given the size of investment, don’t rush and pick the cabinet maker who can do it fastest – it will be worth the wait to find the right partner!
