- 2 cups sugar
- ½ cup shortening
- ½ cup butter
- 2 eggs
- ½ cup dark molasses
- 4 cups flour
- 2 teaspoons cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon ginger
- 1 teaspoon ground cloves

- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt

- Cream together 2 cups sugar, ½ cup shortening and ½ cup butter.
- Stir in 2 eggs and ½ cup dark molasses.
- Whisk together 4 cups flour, 2 teaspoons cinnamon, 1 teaspoon ginger, 1 teaspoon ground cloves, 1 teaspoon nutmeg, 1 teaspoon baking soda and ¼ teaspoon salt and add to sugar-egg mixture.
- Refrigerate dough for 2-3 hours. Roll out and cut into shapes. Bake at 325 F for 10-12 minutes. Decorate with royal icing or leave plain.
